The
Hillsboro Public Library is pleased to offer an array of services for patrons.
These
include:
LIBRARY
CARD
You must provide your name and your address, and agree to the provisions for
responsible use of library materials. Parents must authorize their minor
children to receive a library card. Use of library materials, except denoted
below, are free of
charge.
LIBRARY
MATERIALS
for lending include books, periodicals (magazines), audio books, audio
recordings on CD, and videos. Materials may be borrowed for 2 weeks, except
videos which may be checked out for one week. Materials may be renewed by phone
or in person, if another patron has not already requested that item. All
materials may be borrowed free of charge except for videos. Certain reference
books may not be borrowed. See fee schedule for overdue materials or lost or
damaged
materials.
INTERLOAN
LIBRARY
enables a patron to borrow books from most other libraries in the state. A
request should be made to the local librarian who will then search for the title
and make arrangements for it to be sent to that library for you to pick up. The
library pays for one way mailing at cost, the patron is responsible for return
postage. The WV state
online
catalog
contains a searchable database of all participating libraries in West Virginia,
and may be accessed through a home
computer.
EBSCOHOST
DATABASE
is an extensive Internet online data
base
of thousands of newspapers, journals, magazines. Many offer full text articles.
Archival varies per periodical. Searchable database. This free service is
available also at home if you have a West Virginia library card, the number
being your login. Excellent resource for research at all levels for children,
hobbyists, professionals, students, any who enjoy
information.
HERITAGE
ROOM
contains historical records of Pocahontas County and the surrounding region.
These materials include The Pocahontas Times newspaper on microfilm, census
data, genealogical files, books on the history of the region, and some
memorabilia. Equipment includes a microfilm reader and printer, computer,
scanner, and a color printer. Materials can not be checked out. The room is
available for patrons from 10 am until 5:30 pm and other times by appointment
through a staff librarian. Genealogical and research assistance is available by
appointment.
APPALACHIAN
/ WV COLLECTION
is
a substantial collection of books, periodicals, audio CDs, and videos that
pertain to the culture and region of Appalachia with special focus on West
Virginia. These materials also include works authored by West Virginia writers.
Most of these materials may be borrowed by local patrons or through library
interloan. See listing for
titles.
VIDEOS
may be borrowed for two days, and may be renewed. Patrons are requested to give
a $1.00 per video, with the exception of certain educational value videos that
have no charge. Videos in the Appalachian Collection and Instructional videos
have no fee. See fee
schedule.
CONTRACTOR'S
MANUALS
used to study for licensure are available in some trades. Due to the high cost
of these materials, the Board of Trustees has instituted a policy that a down
payment equivalent to the value of a book must be paid, reimbursable upon return
of that
book.
LAMINATATION
of cards, papers, and documents. See fee
schedule.
COMPUTERS
The library has several computers available for public use. Internet users must
sign agreement
to policy. Computers are assigned to patrons. When patron use exceeds the number
of patrons, time restrictions apply. Computer maintenance and software uploading
is to be done by the librarian or designee. The computers are on a virus scan
maintenance schedule. Patrons may not use their own software or diskettes,
however, personal files may be downloaded on diskettes purchased from the
library.
Several
of the computers off web surfing, email, games (see librarian for CD software),
Microsoft Office programs, and other services such as printing, color printing,
CD burning, scanning. Fees to cover consumable supplies may
apply.
PHOTOCOPYING
is available. See librarian for assistance. $0.15 per copy, or $0.10 per copy
for educational purposes (such as student
homework).
FAX
is available for incoming and outgoing facsimiles. It is recommended that a
patron contact the library if they are expecting an incoming fax. For Hillsboro
Library, use the regular number, (304) 653-4986. A charge is assessed for use of
the fax machine. See fee
schedule.
PRINTING
is available. The default printer for the computers is a b&w laser printer.
Color printing must be scheduled through a librarian (not a volunteer). The
Heritage Room also has printing available for the microfilm viewer. See fee
schedule.
MEETING
ROOM
may be used for community functions as scheduled on a first come first served
basis. A responsible person must make arrangements with the librarian for
obtaining a key (if necessary), and make reasonable efforts to clean up and
secure the facilities when the meeting is finished. Community meetings of a
non-profit use may request from the librarian a waiver of a fee (see fee
schedule).
PLAYGROUP
is a program for 3-5 year old children to provide a positive learning and social
time together. See the librarian for the current schedule. Parents are invited
to attend with their child. A small fee may be collected to cover snacks and
consumable
supplies.
SUMMER
READING
PROGRAM
is held for several weeks during the summer to encourage children to read books.
Awards and prizes are given as incentives to children who reach their goal.
Activities are also held at the library for the children during the week. See
the librarian for schedule details. No
fee.
FEE
SCHEDULE
Printing
b&w (copier or computer printouts) $0.15 per copy. For educational purposes,
$0.10 per
copy.
Color
printing. $2.00 full page, $1.00 for quarter page, $1.50 half page. By
arrangement
only.
Fax
is $0.50 per page incoming, $1.00 per page for outgoing, $5.00 per page
international
outgoing.
Laminating
is $0.50 for card size, $1.00 full
page.
Videos
are $1.00 to use. Certain educational value videos have no fee.
Meeting
room use for commercial purposes is $50 per use Conference Room, and $25 per use
Education Room. Nonprofit users involved with community service are not charged,
but are welcome to donate
supplies.
Overdue
materials are assessed at $0.05 per day.
Lost
or damaged materials are charged retail replacement
value.
Patrons
not returning materials will have further services blocked.
The
library may take legal action against a patron who has persisted in not
returning or paying for
materials
