ART EXHIBIT POLICY

The Pocahontas County Free Libraries

Purpose

The Pocahontas County Free Libraries (PCFL) seeks to provide access to educational, informational and cultural resources to the community. In light of this purpose, PCFL encourages artistic and cultural interests of the community by providing a showcase for art by community and regional artists.

Policy

The Pocahontas County Free Libraries allows artists to display their artwork for a period of 30 days. If available space is not reserved following the 30-day period, the library director has the authority to extend this time frame until another art exhibit is scheduled. Displays should be removed on or before the last day specified. The exhibitor is responsible for setting up and removing the display. If the display is not removed at the time contracted, PCFL reserves the right to dismantle and remove the display. If available, the exhibitor may request to use library wall space and/or exhibit display panels, however PCFL is not obligated to provide this inasmuch as display areas are multipurpose areas. Display space is provided at no expense to the exhibitor. PCFL shall entertain schedule requests however PCFL shall exercise its prerogative to schedule art displays within a time frame that meets its own objectives pertaining to the overall cultural milieu of the community.

Providing display space for view by the public does not constitute PCFL, staff, or Board of Trustee endorsement of the artwork on display. The library is not a museum or art gallery and all art should be of acceptable viewing content for all ages. The PCFL Director or authorized designee reserves the right to censor at his or her sole discretion art or label content that is decided not to be appropriate for display, including during the time period of the exhibit. The PCFL Director or authorized designee also reserves the right to determine whether the art display will meet a reasonable standard of quality expected in art displays. Promotion of an art display is the responsibility of the exhibitor, and should not imply endorsement of the art content or quality by PCFL. At its discretion PCFL may publicize an art exhibit with permission of the exhibitor.

An exhibitor wishing to display art at a PCFL branch (Durbin, Green Bank, McClintic, Hillsboro) shall notify the branch librarian of this interest and a time period for display. The branch librarian shall notify the Director. PCFL will develop a plan with the exhibitor that involves space and display presentation needs, and schedule a time frame.

The exhibitor will not display art for sale during the time frame of the exhibit, and is expected to keep all art displayed through the duration of the scheduled exhibit. However, the exhibitor must post the names of artists and should post contact information. This permits the public to contact an artist to privately discuss purchasing an artwork.

PCFL will not insure displays or exhibits. Although reasonable precautions will be taken to protect materials, the exhibitor needs to understand that the library is a public place accessible to a wide spectrum of the public. Therefore the exhibitor assumes the risk of loss or damage to artwork on display. PCFL will not be responsible for reimbursement or replacement of lost, stolen, or damaged materials.

I have read and understand the Pocahontas County Free Libraries Art Exhibit Policy and agree to abide by the terms stated within.
